PENSOLE of OREGON is a hands-on, one-week-intensive footwear design master class created to identify and introduce aspiring Oregon-based footwear designers to the art of footwear design; MLAB at PENSOLE of OREGON is a one-week class created for the purpose of opening the eyes of aspiring material designers to the world of CMF (color, material, finish).
“Our mission is to provide aspiring footwear and material designers in Oregon a platform to show Oregon footwear companies that there is talent in their own backyard,” Edwards said. “And some of those same local companies will provide scholarships to select students to participate in this exclusive master class at PENSOLE.”
Edwards will lead PENSOLE of OREGON and PENSOLE materials director Suzette Henry will lead MLAB at PENSOLE of OREGON. Both courses will feature adjunct instruction by footwear industry professionals ranging from design directors, design managers, designers, design recruiters and hiring managers.
The master classes will take place concurrently at PENSOLE in Portland from March 24 through 31 and are open only to Oregon students. Application to PENSOLE of Oregon is open to high school and college students at least 16 years of age; MLAB at PENSOLE of OREGON’s applicants must be at least 18 years old.
The application deadline for both classes is March 14. For PENSOLE of OREGON students must submit one original footwear design, SKETCHED BY HAND in blackand white or color to http://www.MESH01.com/pensole in order to be eligible to win a scholarship to attend the master class. Applications submitted through any means other than MESH01 will not be considered.
For MLAB at PENSOLE of OREGON students must submit two original palettes, showing material & color design, either to http://www.MESH01.com/pensole or by mail, using textile, synthetic or cow leather and any creative medium in 8 ½” x 11” format, to:

MLAB founder Suzette Henry is a color and material design innovator with a career that spans over 35 years at brands such as Marithe + Francois Girbaud, Guess, Skechers and Jordan Brand. Henry created the MLAB at PENSOLE in partnership with the industry’s top color and material suppliers from footwear, apparel, automotive and CMF.
Since the first PENSOLE class in 2010, more than 60 Academy graduates are now working professionally, full-time or as interns, for footwear companies worldwide including Converse, Reebok, DC, ecco, Columbia Sportswear, Bluehaven, AND1, North Face, New Balance, Wolverine, Cole Haan, Under Armour, Stride Rite, adidas, JORDAN and Nike.
